A Waterfall in the Amazon.

Deep in the rainforest of Presidente Figueiredo — a small town a couple of hours north of Manaus — a family-tended sanctuary of waterfalls opens its gates to anyone willing to make the journey.

The land has belonged to Lara's family for years. Among the trees, clear water tumbles over dark stone into pools you can swim in, and the air is cool and loud with birdsong. It is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful places in the region — and it is already open to the public, welcoming visitors who come to bathe, rest, and lose track of time.

“To protect a place is to invite people to fall in love with it.

This thesis project asks how architecture can bring more people to the waterfalls — and let them enjoy the place more deeply — without taking away the very wildness that makes it special. The aim is to grow tourism for Presidente Figueiredo and the surrounding community, turning a hidden family treasure into a destination the whole region can be proud of.

    The Setting

Trails through native forest, a sequence of falls and bathing pools, and the constant sound of moving water. The design begins by reading the land — where the light falls, where people already gather, where the forest should be left untouched.

  2. 02

    Tourism, Carefully

Light-touch interventions — welcome structures, walkways, lookouts and signage — make the waterfalls easier and safer to reach while protecting the ecosystem. Growth that supports local livelihoods and keeps the forest standing.

    The Experience

Just a couple of hours from Manaus, the visit is meant to feel like an escape: arrive, slow down, walk to the water, and stay a while. Architecture as a quiet host — present where it helps, invisible where it shouldn't be.
